Founder Deborah Blum fell in love with goats at an early age. “Goats are really special beings,” says Deb. “They have wonderful personalities and are very similar to dogs in their friendliness and curious nature. They are confident, hardy, and very social. Goatlandia believes all animals deserve to live long happy lives free from cruelty, torture, and slaughter. In addition to animals from dairy and meat production facilities, Goatlandia also save animals that are abused, abandoned, or injured, animals with special needs, and animals whose owners are unable to keep them.
Jill Posener started Pawfund in 2011 because she saw a problem with people who love their animals but don’t have the funds to take care of them. So, with a group of likeminded people, Paw Fund provides free veterinary care. Volunteers go into homeless encampments and vaccinate every animal they can find. Paw Fund provides a free spay and neuter program for Contra Costa and Alameda County residents. It’s all about prevention and harm reduction and keeping animals in the homes they have and out of shelters.
Founded in 2004, Harvest Home’s Animal Sanctuary’s mission is to provide life-long care for our rescued animals, and to educate the public about humane animal care and practices. We rehabilitate, both physically and psychologically, mistreated animals and, if possible, we will find appropriate homes for them. In an effort to prevent further cruelty to these animals, we educate the public on caring for companion animals as well as on issues concerning farmed animals.
It all began with a little piglet named “Esther.” Steve Jenkins, a Realtor, and his life partner, Derek Walter, a Magician, were living an ordinary life when a rescued would-be mini pig came into their lives. Never ones to succumb to the fear of a challenge, Steve and Derek buckled up for the ride of a lifetime as “Esther the Wonder Pig” turned into a social media powerhouse. In just two short years, Esther had amassed hundreds of thousands of followers from all over the world, and her Dads had become among the world’s most well-known animal activists. In 2014, with help from Esther’s followers, Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary was born. Now Esther and her Dads rescue and rehabilitate abandoned and abused farmed animals, and spread Esther’s style of love and compassion – known as The Esther Effect!
The Animal Legal Defense Fund files high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, provides free legal assistance and training to prosecutors in their fight against animal cruelty, supports animal protection legislation, and provides resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the field of animal law.
As human habitation continues to expand into the wild places that surround us, people and wildlife increasingly find themselves calling the same places home. At WildCare, we work to make sure all species can coexist — not just by treating sick or injured animals (nearly 4,000 of them a year), but also by teaching children and adults to understand and appreciate wildlife, by sharing knowledge and instructions on how to live peacefully with the animals among us and by advocating for better protection of wildlife and our remaining open spaces.
Founded in 1989, Animal Place’s California animal shelters fills a much-needed niche of farm animal rescue, sanctuary, education and adoption. Animal Place is one of the largest and oldest animal sanctuaries in the nation. We operate a 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, California, and a 60-acre animal shelter in Vacaville, California. Animal Place extends compassion to all life with a special emphasis on farmed animals. This is executed by providing permanent sanctuary, education, legislation and appropriate placement of needy animals.
